La Llorona (2024)
La Llorona is a durational performance piece that recontextualizes the Mexican folklore of La Llorona, a weeping woman who wanders the streets mourning. During the performance, a woman wearing a garment soaked in water walks the streets of New York City as her body metaphorically weeps. The sound of water echoes in an audio piece that accompanies the performance. The piece aims to explore crying as a vulnerable act of cleansing, discomfort, and connection, hoping to create a space of intimacy and vulnerability within the public space.
La Llorona was performed for Rebirth of a Body, an exhibition by Argentina Performance Art and New York Latin American Art Triennial (NYLAAT). The performance took place on Governors Island on July 27th, 2024. The performance started at NYLAAT’s House and looped across to the Island’s ferry station. The exhibition also included a set of photographs inspired in the series.
La Llorona was performed again on October 18th, 2024 for Art in Odd Places. The performance took place on 14th street between Union Square west and 8th Avenue in Manhattan, NY.
